We are a global network of leading lawyers, academics, practitioners, writers, and journalists striving for equality. We pool our expertise, critical perspectives, creativity and extensive experience to protect and promote the rights of those structurally marginalized in our European societies. Her doctoral dissertation analysed the processes of intersectional discrimination in the French and German labor markets for care and household services. A specialist on race and gender equality, she has facilitated workshops for human rights activists in Brazil and India, and for constitutional court judges in South Africa. Her work on intersectionality has been globally recognized and was influential in the drafting of the equality clause in the South African Constitution.

Intersectionality , also called intersectional feminism , is a branch of feminism asserting how all aspects of social and political identities gender, race, class, sexuality, disability, etc discrimination overlap or "intersect" --for example, race with gender in the case of a black woman. The purpose of intersectionality is to identify that these forms of discrimination are related to one another, and take these relationships into account when working to promote social and political equity. Intersectionality may also be related to the term triple oppression , which engages with similar themes. Critics have argued that intersectionality relies entirely on non-objective concepts such as "systems of power" which themselves lack a material reality, and therefore empirical basis for study, making it an ideological set of ideas, and not a proper sociological concept. The concept of intersectionality is intended to illuminate dynamics that have often been overlooked by feminist theory and movements. This movement disputed the ideas of earlier feminist movements — which were primarily led by white middle-class women — such as the idea that women were a homogeneous category who shared the same life experiences. Racial inequality was a factor that was largely ignored by first-wave feminism, which was primarily concerned with gaining political equality between men and women.

This Focus Area aims at acknowledging and tackling discrimination based on gender identity, expression and sexual orientation and promoting equity from an intersectional perspective. AEGEE-Europe believes that in order to protect all young people from discrimination and strive for substantive equality, policy makers need to adopt an intersectional approach at every stage of the policy-making process, including in the field of anti-discrimination law and youth policy. This position paper makes a case for an intersectional approach to youth policy and anti-discrimination law. Since then, the intersectional approach is widely used as a framework which aims at exposing the interconnection between different identities such as gender, race, sexual orientation, class, dis ability, etc.

Intersectionality theory provides a dynamic research paradigm—a prism from which to analyze more fully a range of social problems in order to ensure inclusive remedies and greater collaboration across social movements. Intersectionality moves beyond traditional frameworks that separate social problems into discrete challenges facing specific groups. Intersectionality sheds light on the unique experiences that are produced when various forms of discrimination intersect with these converging identities. It is a dynamic strategy for linking the grounds of discrimination e. The Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies was established to examine how social structures and related identity categories such as gender, race, and class interact on multiple levels to create social inequality. The first such center of its kind, the Center's research projects and initiatives will bring together scholars and practitioners from law, sociology, feminist and gender studies, human rights, social justice, and other fields to explore the relationship of intersectionality to their work, to shape more effective remedies, and to promote greater collaboration between and across social movements.

Intersectional approaches to vulnerability reduction and resilience-building. Research reports and studies April This in turn will help in targeting policies and programmes. Social groups are neither homogenous nor static, and intersectional approaches recognise this complexity by taking historical, social, cultural and political contexts into account.
