Writing Advice w/ Billy Merrell - 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

The event gave students the change to meet representatives from the organizations that sponsored their Awards. After two years of attempting to even be recognized by Scholastic, I had finally won something. Scholastic was merely a competition that I participated in annually but never received any award for.

News Detail. As for the writing, 18 regional awards were won by students in our Middle and Upper School divisions:. I always email the Scholastic competition information to my students in the fall, and it is up to them whether or not they submit. I am psyched this year that some students submitted pieces they wrote for class. Others submitted poetry they wrote on their own. They were very excited. Regional Gold Key winners were invited to a reading on February 25 at McNally Jackson, an independent bookstore in downtown Manhattan, and featured several guest speakers from the writing program at the New School.

Weekend Enrichment classes for November 22 have been cancelled due to inclement weather. Please check the Weekend Enrichment webpage for further updates. There, you will find important dates and instructions for signing up to participate in the competition. Beginning in mid-January, you can use the button below to see the award winners and print out your certificate if you won. Invitations are typically sent in mid-January. Gold Key works automatically advance to national judging. Apply to be among 90 of the finest young artists and writers who spend three weeks working with world-class faculty on one of the premier arts campuses in the US.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is honored to host this year's exhibition and celebrate the creativity of these young artists. In addition, literary and visual-arts professionals served as judges, selecting works based on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. These high school seniors blew judges away with their original portfolios and in June, they will travel to New York City to be honored at the annual National Ceremony at world-famous Carnegie Hall. Using bright blues, pinks and greens, he captures an abstract world based on the subtleties of light, contour and lines.
