Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Tima Murrell (Childrens Literature)
Pete the Cat is driving a bus for all of the little kittens and one small dog. Following the same rhyming pattern of the popular children s song, the book takes the reader on a journey through a day of sounds with Pete. The book is written to follow the song, so it is not written in typical narration. Young readers will enjoy the rhyming patterns that can be either read or sung. The illustrator has filled each page with color which helps to bring the story alive. The different fonts make the writing stand out on the brightly colored pages. The simplistic illustrations will appeal to the young reader s eyes. It could help little singers develop an interest in reading. Young fans of Pete the Cat will love this book and want to add it to their favorites. If children are not familiar with the Pete the cat books yet, they can still enjoy the illustrations and lyrical wording. 2013, HarperCollins Publishers,, $9.99. Ages 4 to 8.
Professional Recommendation/Review #2: School Library Journal
K-Gr 1—Cool dude Pete the Cat is now driving a yellow school bus and picking up kitties along his route. After covering the traditional lines about horns that go beep, beep, beep and wipers that go swish, swish, swish, this book offers up a surprise conclusion. Pete picks up one lone dog and a few pages later, the pooch is seen driving the bus, while Pete the Cat croons from the rooftop, Lets Rock Out! The colorful yellow and blue artwork rendered in the artists familiar pen-and-ink and watercolor will remind fans of the other Pete books, with their hero sporting that deadpan stare. If your library doesnt already have too many Wheels on the Bus clones, Pete the Cats version is cool.—Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA
Response to Two Professional Reviews: I agree with review #1 that the pictures in the book brings this book to life. The pictures are very vibrant and pleasing to look at. It also mentions how the font make the writing stand out on the brightly colored pictures. I couldn’t agree more. Both of the reviews seem to enjoy the books.
Evaluation of Literary Elements: This book is meant for young readers. It gets the children singing to a tune that may be familiar with them, but with a twist.
Consideration of Instruction Application: This is a great book for signing. You can have your students guess what might be coming on the bus next. You can also have then say what part comes next. Another thing that could be done is have them make up the next thing that happens and have them come up with a sound that goes with it.
