The Pyramids of Egypt - How and Why - Naked Science Documentary (Full)

The Great Pyramid of Giza is a huge pyramid built by the Ancient Egyptians. It stands near Cairo, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient.

Pyramids of Giza

In ancient times they were included among the Seven Wonders of the World. The pyramids of Giza were royal tombs built for three different pharaohs. The northernmost and oldest pyramid of the group was built for Khufu Greek: Cheops , the second king of the 4th dynasty. Called the Great Pyramid, it is the largest of the three. The middle pyramid was built for Khafre Greek: Chephren , the fourth of the eight kings of the 4th dynasty.

There are few monuments in the world as iconic as the Pyramids of Giza, a necropolis that dates back nearly 5, years. As a history buff, I've read more books about ancient Egypt and seen more photos and videos of the pyramids than I can remember. I even made a diorama of the Giza complex for a project in middle school. Upon arriving in Giza in December, I caught my first glimpse of the pyramids, a sight I had been waiting to see since childhood. I fully expected to be disappointed.

The Pharaoh in Egyptian Society

Some of the stones are limestone quarried from near the site, but the larger granite stones came from Aswan, over miles away. The Great Pyramid — also named the Pyramid of Khufu after the fourth dynasty Pharaoh for whom it was built — sits alongside the pyramids of Menkaure and Khafre, and is perfectly aligned with the constellation of Orion. Although they are long gone, highly polished limestone blocks — known as casing stones — covered the surface of the Pyramid. It is thought that a massive earthquake loosened many of the stones and they were taken away to build mosques in nearby Cairo. They were given access to the Great Pyramid in April , which turned out to be quite a mistake. The pair took specimens from cartouches in an attempt to prove Khufu took the credit for the structure when it was the people of Atlantis that built it. They were arrested, along with their cameraman and several members of the Egyptian Antiquities Ministry.

It is located on the Giza plateau near the modern city of Cairo and was built over a twenty-year period during the reign of the king Khufu BCE, also known as Cheops of the 4th Dynasty. Until the Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris , France in CE, the Great Pyramid was the tallest structure made by human hands in the world; a record it held for over 3, years and one unlikely to be broken. Other scholars have pointed to the Lincoln Cathedral spire in England , built in CE, as the structure which finally surpassed the Great Pyramid in height but, still, the Egyptian monument held the title for an impressive span of time. The pyramid rises to a height of feet metres with a base of feet metres and is comprised of over two million blocks of stone. Some of these stones are of such immense size and weight such as the granite slabs in the King's Chamber that the logistics of raising and positioning them so precisely seems an impossibility by modern standards.
