Don't worry about things you can't control

I once worked with the head copywriter of an advertising firm who found it difficult not to worry about the financial health of her company—how many clients account services was landing, what kind of designs the art department was producing, whether her boss would start laying people off.

Don’t Stress Over What You Can’t Control

There's a brutal truth in life that some people refuse to accept --you have no control over many of the things that happen in life. Some of the people who resist that truth become control freaks. They micromanage, refuse to delegate tasks, and try to force other people to change. They think if they can gain enough control over other people and the situations they find themselves in, they can prevent bad things from happening. Others know they can't prevent bad things from happening, but they worry about them anyway.

Your session is about to expire!

Because letting go of control goes directly against our modernized, industrialized way of living — we are go-getters, doers, architects of our destiny. So allowing things to happen was not in my DNA. I had never been one to sit back and passively let go of control.

If they have complete control over a situation, they would never be worrying about it to begin with. It is a complete waste of energy which we can better use elsewhere. A simple example would be a time when my website went down two years ago. The only times I could get online was when the train stopped for gas and that stop had free public Wi-Fi which was how I discovered my site was down. Now, issues pertaining my website tend to bother me more than other issues as my site is my career, my livelihood, and my life all rolled into one. Every minute the site is offline, I lose revenue, visitors, and potential business and media opportunities, since no one can access my material. There is no internet access on board.

Once we realize the only thing we truly can control is ourselves with our attitude and effort, life becomes MUCH easier and the overseas experience becomes much more manageable. Lesson of the year: stop trying to control things out of your control. One one side I write all the things I can not control. Things Things I can control : How I react to my teammate and her mood, my effort at practice, making sure I got better, staying after to work on, my attitude I brought on the court, my reaction to adversity, not giving into the complaining party, and focusing on getting better. Beside each of the items you can control, include an action item. How many times you smile today. How much effort you exert at work.

By Stephanie Kirby. Source: flickr. It has been well observed that worrying about things over which you do not have any control can lead to stress and less satisfaction in life. You can greatly improve your own personal happiness when you learn how to stop caring about things you can't control. One of the single most valuable, necessary, and helpful 'truths' to accept as we navigate this life, is that we truly have absolutely no ability to control anyone other than ourselves. Failing to accept this stark, basic, reality leads us to waste time, effort, energy and emotion in ways that are completely useless.
