Dragonriders of Pern is a sci-fi science fantasy series written primarily by American-Irish author Anne McCaffrey , [a] who initiated it in Beginning in , her middle child Todd McCaffrey has written Pern novels, both solo and jointly with Anne. The series as of July comprises 23 novels and several short stories. Most of the short fiction has been collected in two volumes or incorporated in one of the novels, so Dragonriders of Pern is sometimes identified with the 24 books. Life on Pern as presented in the novels resembles a pre-industrial society with lords, holds, harpers musicians, entertainers, and teachers , and dragons, with the occasional examples of higher technology like flamethrowers, telegraphs , chemical fertilizers , and powerful microscopes and telescopes. Pernese people are described as belonging to four basic groups: Weyrfolk including Dragonriders who live in the Weyrs, the Holders who live in the Holds cities, towns and farms , the crafters who live in Crafthalls or are assigned to work their crafts in certain Holds , and the Holdless who have no permanent home including traders, displaced Holders, and brigands. One of the main threats to Pernese civilization in the series is Thread , which is described as a mycorrhizoid spore that periodically rains down on the planet due to the orbit of the Red Star.
I've never read it, but I've heard good things about Naomi Novik's Temeraire Series. The first book in the series is His Majesty's Dragon, if I'm not mistaken.

Typically, these creatures are majestic, rarified, and have some ability to communicate with other individuals, either through speech or telepathy. Many fantasy books have dragons, but few feature dragons as something other than wild beasts to be ridden or slain. This list gives you some of the best out that contain dragons as major parts of the story or even major characters in the story itself. Because I'll invariably receive comments asking about this: I've intentionally left off many books from this list which I don't consider 'the best' dragon fantasy. This includes Eragon and the Dragonlance novels. Her not-quite-a-direct-sequel series, Live Ship Traders, introduces more of her vision of dragons to the reader, and dragons do play a central role in the series though the book is not necessarily directly focused on them.
