The Bible and homosexuality
Posted August 23, As Australia faces a postal survey on same-sex marriage, we are seeing a steady stream of articles arguing the Yes or No case. Many on the No side are prone to citing the Bible or appealing to "biblical values". But what does the Bible actually say about human sexuality and homosexuality in particular? What follows represents a summary of critical biblical scholarship on the issue.
The Bible defines marriage in Genesis as a union between one man and one woman. Jesus Christ upholds this definition of marriage in Matthew , as does the Apostle Paul in Ephesians Further to this, same-sex practice is specifically highlighted as sinful a number of times in Scripture. Further references are made in the New Testament. For example, in Romans , amid echoes to the Genesis creation account, both male and female same-sex practice are treated as sinful. Further references to the sinfulness of same-sex practice can be seen in 1 Corinthians and 1 Timothy The Scriptures are, therefore, consistent in their prohibition of same-sex sexual activity, across different periods of salvation history and within different cultural settings.
Outline of Bible-related topics. Passages in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament that have been interpreted as involving same-sex sexual acts and desires. Chapters 18 and 20 of Leviticus form part of the Holiness code and list prohibited forms of intercourse , including the following verses:. These two verses have historically been interpreted by Jews and Christians as clear overall prohibitions against homosexual acts in general. More recent interpretations focus more on its context as part of the Holiness Code , a code of purity meant to distinguish the behavior of Israelites from the polytheistic Canaanites.
The Bible says nothing about 'homosexuality' as an innate dimension of What really matters is the quality of the relationship, not the gender of the persons involved. And marriage is created not by religious ceremony or civil government.
