The Illumination Process: A Shamanic Guide to Transforming Toxic Emotions into Wisdom, Power, and Grace by Alberto Villoldo
The Illumination Process guides the reader on a healing journey, forged by the timeless wisdom of indigenous cultures and the latest theories of neurobiology. Through various stages in this journey of initiation, we grow to understand the causes of our suffering and how to free ourselves from the pain and drama of our unhealed emotions. Life itself invites us to be initiated through many means—the possibility of love, the loss of a parent or friend, the birth of a child, or a serious health crisis. True initiation is empowered by facing personal challenges and experiencing the spiritual rebirth—or illumination—that follows.
Unifying this book is the sacred process of transforming toxic emotions into sources of power and grace. The Illumination Process shows us how to bid a joyful good-bye to the people and places we have met, discovering a sacred space where the spirit inhabits, uniting the body and soul. When we learn to let go from difficult situations and problems, to accept our lives as they are, we can begin to identify with a self that is eternal.
Recounting his own experiences, tracing the mythologies of an array of cultures, and expanding his inquiry into the field of neurobiology, best-selling author Alberto Villoldo shows readers how they can benefit from these sacred practices.

7 Signs You May Be an Urban Shaman
The mystery around these initiations is intentional due to an agreement between teachers and students to not to talk about these experiences. This is not because of any misdirected conspiracy to keep powerful knowledge in the hands of just a few, but simply a historically effective strategy to maintain the freshness and power of the experiences for each new individual who faces them. Because of the nature of these experiences, one is left afterwards with a natural sensitivity to exactly how intimate and important they are. You first hear the lore, but only after experiencing initiations directly do you truly understand why such silence has been maintained. Initiations are often quite ancient and like the rest of shamanic knowledge and awareness, are at their core, very similar throughout the world, over time, and among radically different cultures. This is because humans in their core are everywhere so similar to one another.
Suffering has long been associated with the shamanic process. Our studies of ancient shamanic cultures indicate that tribal shamans were often chosen based on how they overcame personal adversity as witnessed by their tribe. Thus, after surviving their soul's initiation to emerge as a spiritual conduit to their communities, shamans were bestowed with the power to help their communities. This concept has been carried through many histories and cultures as "the wounded healer," and has been lauded as the singular most pivotal step onto the path of shamanism, even into modern practice. Contemporary shamanic paths are a mixed bag at best.
Although formerly only known by shamans, I present this knowledge now to spiritual seekers and for the benefit of mankind. Over the years I learned a lot, with new information about shamanism I had never read about in any literature.

2) You are a bridge between nature and the human soul:
The haunting sounds of a song suddenly appeared around me, intensifying my feelings of being utterly lost in an alien universe. The sounds that kept drawing me in, had a pleading quality that made me want to weep with sorrow. As I started singing, I realized my song was inviting the spirit of the herb to move into my body.
