His published works include several collections of cultural essays and short stories. He has worked with the BBC Urdu Service and retired in 1996.

Born in officially , Abidi moved to Karachi with his family in After graduating from Islamia College, he worked for 15 years as a little-known journalist before travelling to Europe for a course and subsequently moving to London.
