Procol Harum: Beyond the Pale by Claes JohansenIn May 1967, Procol Harum smashed into the charts all over the world, and into chart history, with a song called A Whiter Shade of Pale. Combining Gary Brookers soulful voice, Keith Reids enigmatic lyrics and Matthew Fishers sweeping organ, it became one of the enduring anthems of the 1960s. Before they split in 1977 Procol Harum went on to make some of the best albums of the era, including classics such as Shine on Brightly and A Salty Dog. This book, drawn from years of research by musician and novelist Claes Johansen, is an insightful look at one of Britains finest ever rock acts.

I hadn't seen Procol in concert since and was not overly impressed by their live concert recordings. That said, Gary Brooker and friends, put on an amazing, energetic show of well known and not-so-well-known Procol songs. Brooker was in fine form and his supporting players especially the lead guitarist were top notch. I was really pleased that the band played tunes from Grand Hotel and Broken Barricades. The version of Whaling Stories was particularly good. The musicians were incredible.
